Chapter Two Chapter Three Chapter Four Chapter Five In Progress King's Blog Turtle Gardens Animal Rescue |
I was on another LONG drive. I had only been on a couple of drives since the friendly people in the van had rescued me and my pack from Bella Coola and drove us to Turtle Gardens Animal Rescue. This drive was longer and there were alot of us packed in, this time. We were all very tired and I wanted the van to stop. It finally did. Daddy Dave came around to the side door and tried to encourage me out. It was kinda crowded in there but he finally managed to slip a leash around my collar and brought me out. It was very dark out but the air seemed warmer than I was used to. We were at a place with very different smells. I couldn't smell much that was familiar. I could smell fuel, the stuff people use in their trucks and cars. I could make out many other smells but none that made me believe I had been in this place before. There was a man and a lady standing there. They had happy faces and the man took the leash but they didnt really seem that interested in me. They only talked to Dave and Bear who had been sitting up front in the van.
The new people talked for awhile then the lady walked away to another car. She opened the door and led a dog in my direction. "Oh goody,a new playmate." I was happy and wagged my tail in approval. I panted a happy pant as the new dog came up to me. I could sense this was a younger female and she was very excited. I could sense she was trying very hard not to be too excited. We said our hellos and then the lady put the new dog back in the car and went away with Dave. The man walked me over to the brick building where I promptly lifted my leg and let my bladder empty itself. I heard the man say "opps" though I have no idea what he meant. In a short while Dave and the lady came out of the brick building. We walked over to the van and Bear and Dave both patted me and said, "Good bye, King, be a good boy." They looked very, very sad. I think that was when I realized I wasn't going back in the van with them.
I saw Sunny on a leash with another lady as well. I wondered where he was going? Where was Mamma Yvette? Were we going to go back to see her now? The new lady went back to the car and led the new dog to me again. The three of us walked away and went for a short walk around the big brick building. There was a snow covered field there. The new dog and I wandered a little bit and she peed. We walked around a little bit longer before I felt I needed to relieve myself even further. I was aware of a car pulling up and saw the new man get out. He came over and walked with us. He seemed fine. What I really wanted to do was wander around and concentrate on where I was. But that's not what happened next.
Next, the man went back and started the car and the lady led the other dog and me back to it. She opened the back door and called, "Up, Molly." The other dog lept up into the car and the lady closed the door. Then she walked around the car and opened the other door. She looked me in the eyes, patted my head, and then patted the car seat. She said," Come on boy, up you go." and she gently tugged at my collar. NOPE! Im not going in there. I thought, "Where is Daddy Dave and the van. I want to go back now. I need to see Mamma Yvette and all my doggy friends. It's been to long now lets go home." But then the man stepped out of the car and stood behind me. The lady offered me a very good smelling cheesy treat and tried to coax me in the car. "Oh my..." I so did not want to go in. Then she gently lifted my front end as the man gently pushed on my butt. "Darn it." I was in. The Mollydawg sort of moved over a bit so there was enough room for us both. The back seat was full but comfortable. I must admit the soft, thick, comfy mat in there was nice. So nice in fact that I decided to just curl up and fall fast asleep. Which is exactly what I did. The next thing I remember hearing, was my name being called, "King." The car door was already opened and the Mollydawg was out of the car. The people were trying to coax me out. Oh dear not another wake up. I was so tired. "Please leave me here to sleep." Actually, my legs did feel quite cramped. Perhaps I'd go out and just take a short walk to stretch them. Then hop back in.
Oh yes, that did feel good. I stretched and sniffed around for what seemed like a very long time. Everywhere I walked I could smell Molly. I had many, many, places I needed to mark. The people and Mollydawg walked along with me. Every once in awhile Mollydawg would signal to me that she wanted to play. She was VERY persistant. I just ignored her. I was no way in the mood for play. Perhaps another time.
It wasnt much longer before the people called out, "House." Molly ran to them, so I joined her. They had the door opened to the house and they were standing inside the doorway. Mollydawg went in right away. Not only were my legs still tired but I didn't really feel very comfortable going in. I just stood at the bottom of the steps. The lady tried to coax me again with a tastey treat. "Nope. Thank you anyway, I dont want it." She came back outside with me for a couple of minutes. She spoke to me and patted my head. I thought this lady was a nice people. She definitely wasn't my Mamma Yvette, but she sounded kind. We sat for a few minutes then she opened the door again and called me in. "Ok, I'll come in and see what's up." In I went. I sat inside the doorway on a mat and smelled all the smells. Very different indeed. Even though I could smell Mollydawg, I didn't really want to go any farther into the house. Everyone else, the man, lady and Mollydawg disappeared into another room. I decided to just lay by the doorway and wait. I'm not sure what I was waiting for. I just wanted to get comfortable, and sure enough no one bothered me. Once in awhile the lady would come back and step close to me. She would pat my head and speak soft to me. She tried to coax me a few times with cookies but I didn't really want to follow her. I fell asleep for a little while. When I woke up I felt kind of alone. I could hear the peoples voices in the other room and decided maybe I'd try a little look around. I don't know how the lady knew I was coming in but she appeared in the doorway again. She patted her leg and called my name and a funny word I had never heard before, "King, Howay." Hmm? Then she said "Come here boy, Howay. Come on good boy." She made the come here signal and I thought I knew what she meant. I was feeling a bit safer so I followed her to the living room. Oh nice! There was a big fluffy mat. Oh wait! TWO mats! The Mollydawg was on one and the lady patted the other one so I went right over and layed down. As I layed there I listened to the people talk and watched what was going on. I noticed Mollydawg seemed to have a very nice big mat and I liked that it was placed close to the people. I wished I could be in that place. Just as I was thinking that, I fell fast asleep again.
Sometime throughout the night I woke up and smelled my new surroundings. It was mostly dark, I could see tiny red and green blinking lights on several shelves in the livingroom. I remember seeing a few of these over the years but never quite as many as I saw here now. Before I had fallen asleep, I vaguely remembered the people trying to get me to come down some stairs with them. They walked down some scarey looking stairs and disappeared around a corner. Molly went willingly with them but I felt more comfort in staying where I was here in their livingroom. Well not entirely true. I actually decided to move over onto Molly's mat as soon as she left it. It wasn't so much, more comfortable, but it was a tad bigger than the one I was on before. I wanted to get up and look around but I was so tired I only sniffed the air from my mat. I turned a few circles and found a spot I could get cozied. I fell asleep warm, completely relaxed, and dreamed of Mamma Yvette, Daddy Dave and ALL my doggy friends at Turtle Gardens.
