Home Alone

The day started out just as normal as ever. We went for a short walk before the sun came up. We came home and had our yummy breakfast. I was all snuggled back onto my mat in the living room. Mom and dad always go away for a few hours each day. I dont know where they go or what they do. Dad always leaves first.
Mom and I kiss him good-bye and then go open the gate for him to drive through.
Mom fusses about for about an hour after that, I just sit and watch her. I always know when she's about to go 'cuz she puts on her coat and shoes.

I used to think I was going along with her but I've learned on these days I dont go. There's a few days that go by when Im home for a few hours at a time alone. I wish I wasnt alone it makes me feel sad. I hope they never forget to coem home. When mom leaves she always calls me to my mat, (if Im not there yet, but I always am) and she tells me to stay home. I always wonder what she thinks I'm going to do when she leaves. I havent yet learned how to open the door. Nor do I have any inclination to do that. I just want to go to sleep. My tummy is full of my breaky and I've done my morning business. What else can I want to do? Funny mom.

There was a few times actually where I put my time, home alone to REALLY good use. I used to roam around and sniff at every litttle crack and cranny in the house. Upstairs and down. I sometimes would drag daddy's slippers up tomy mat and chew on them. They were so tastey. I even chewed on one of mommy's little summer dresses. It tasted just like her and it made me feel good. On those days, when mom and dad came home they seemed a little upset about something but I never did really understand just what it was. They would show me the tastey thing I had chewed and then they would say something like "Dont Touch" and then always gave me a chewy toy. Wierd I guess, but I finally figured out that my toys were far better than the tough old stuff I used to chew on. Besides mom and dad seemed happier. I certainly wouldnt do any of those things any more. I'm far more mature now. My teeth dont hurt like they used to when I was a puppy as well.

I remember sometimes people would come by and knock at my door when I was home alone. The first times it happened I was quite frightened. I could hear people footsteps on the porch. They got louder and louder untill I could see them through the window. I just coiled up on my mat and layed very, very still. Then the knock at the door came. I knew this sound because mom had done it lot of times in the old days when she was training me to stay home alone without barking and freaking out. I tried real hard not to freak out on these days. My tummy was very upset though. When I saw and heard the people going back down the stairs outside, I slooooowly slipped up to the window and peeked through the white shiney fabric things mom had up. I couldn't smell the people very well. I could see them and hear them going through my walking gate. I felt a little bit braver so I started to bark at them. I had to smudge my wet nose up against the fabricy things. That's just about when the people turned around and stopped to look up at me. It kind of scared me and I meant to jump back to my mat and curl up again. As I did, I caught a teeny peice of the fabricy things on my collar. It didn't hang on very well. Just enough to pull across a small shelf in front of the window. Well! Suddenly a plant type thing with dirt came tumbling down on me and tumbled all over the floor. Needles to say I didnt go near that part of the window again, (for a long time anyway)
I smelled the dirt and even tried to taste it but I didnt like it. I decided to just go back to my mat and wait for my dad.

A few hours later sure enough my dad came home, like he always does. He's never gone for very long. He comes home to eat food and guess what? He ALWAYS leaves me a tastey little morsel when he's done. I love my dad. He takes me outside for a short play and I go potty again. Then he pops me back onto my mat for another little while for another rest. He leaves again for a bit longer. Its not very long before my mom comes back home again. She kind of made a funny noise when she came in and saw that the plant type thing had jumped off the shelf. She stared around the room and at the window fabricy thing for a while too. She tucked it back in behind the shelf and seemed to wipe off my nice nose print I had made on it for her. She took me out of the room and got that BIGGEST noisiest machine type thing I don't like. It's even scarier than the yard machine. Have I told you about that part yet?? WOW it was so scarey. IT SUCKS UP ALL KINDS OF THINGS. Including one of dads socks. YIKES! I'll have to tell you all about that one day.

Anyway my being home alone for a few hours each day goes on for a few days in a row.
Then there is always a couple of days when BOTH mom and dad are home ALL DAY!

It was on one of these days that I saw,

THE BIG WATER!

Chapter Six

I thought it was just an average day of a car ride on our way to a nice park for me to romp around in.
Was I ever in for a surprise. Had they gone mad again!
